The Suspense thrillers have significantly lower gross than drama, comedy,animation or adventure movies. I think this is because Suspense films, have a certificate of usually 15 and above which already cuts there total gross in half as they are alienating potential audiences.
Also judging by the total gross of Suspense films in 2009 and 2008 we see that it has risen exponentially even though the total gross of suspense films was higher in '09. I think the reason why the total gross increased rapidly was because of the actors in the film in 2010, Shutter Island was directed by Martin Scorsese who is a popular director and also starred Leonardo DiCaprio who is a very famous and well known actor which may have been the reason so many people watched it.The Town was directed by and starred Ben Affleck who like Leonardo DiCaprio had an inherited audience from his previous films.
Even though the total gross of Suspense films are an 8 digit number, they have still earned more money that Musicals, Documentaries and Sci-Fi's. This shows that the Suspense genre is still popular even though a limited number of people see these type of films.
